No. I know a few people who have played him, and they all say the legend is correct...he was the best ever. They all say the movie about him is largely fiction and very untrue on many accounts.
I was taught the game by Oswald Jacoby, also a famous gin player, and author of two gin books. His latest book, written in the early 60's, is still excellent and I learned much from his book and from him personally.
Oswald was also a world champion backgammon player but most known for bridge, where he captained the American Team. I used to play with and against the American team often when I lived in Dallas, where they practiced. Often we sat down and played backgammon and gin.
