What about buying a bye?

Like most, I feel two ways about rebuys--a lot depends on whether or not it holds up the schedule for the entire tournament. I am very much in favor of ways that increase the pot and help the directors make more but as pointed out, revuys might detract from side events.
What I am in favor of, to increase the pot and add some "fairness" is buying byes. We have done this with the Anti-cruelty tournament when we had 14 players and two woukd get byes. We simply auctioned off the byes.
Now, in a fairly large tournament where you might not quite have 64or 128 players you could have entrants pay an extra, say, 25 percent to guarantee they would get a bye if there is one. And of course if you have 8 people pay and only 6 byes you would draw from the 8 and give 2 their money back.
That way I would not be quite as upset when I didnt get a bye and I would know that the people who did get a bye put more money into the pool.
Of course, maybe 25% is not the right number--the smaller the field the more that percent should be as a bye increases your equity more.
