Not a poker player but I figured ace-anything is normally worth at least matching the blind. Is that incorrect?

That's incorrect. Most ace-anything hands are worth ... folding, generally. Exactly which hands are worth playing (and more likely with a raise than merely calling the blind) depends (mainly on the denomination of the other card, whether your two cards are of the same suit, your position, the number of players at the table, and the number of players already in (and tournament considerations like stack and blind size, etc., etc.).
