Does multithreaded GNU support dual core?

No reason not to get 2GB of RAM, I think. RAM is $20/gig these days. If it's completely for rollouts and GNU on 4 cores doesn't even use 1GB, then you might be able to shave off $20 there.

All told, it probably costs you $300-$350 for the CPU (X3350/Q9450, unless you want to take the plunge to ~$1k CPUs), and random amounts here or there for the rest of it--$20 for ram, ~$50 for a case, so somewhere in the $400-$500 range.

Another thing you may want to consider is that Intel is releasing a new socket soon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_(microarchitecture)
