Backgammon supercomputing

Thanks for your insights. I am aware that the ten quadcore performance is probably out of reach for backgammon purposes. As I understand, it's not that there are too many serial parts (rollouts are pretty much inherently parallel) but that gpus are only good at dumb number crunching and shouldn't be used, for example, for generating move lists.

It's interesting that you find the Cell processors more promising. I seem to recall that in peak performance terms, the gpus offer much more bang for the buck. I assume the programming model for the Cells is much more flexible!?

Lastly, I wouldn't have thought that 32-bit precision is a problem. Could you expand a bit on why you think it is?
