Is there ANYONE you have played where you would not use their board and dice?
I can't think of anyone. However, I can think of a few I would think twice before agreeing to use their app. If I feel something fishy is going on with their board or dice, at least I have an option of checking. What option do I have if I feel something is fishy with the app?
Unless you know the person has a most unsavory reputation, and there are very few, and even fewer in the US, you would not be concerned at all. Same for using their dice roller...
Why don't you do a social experiment with your friends whom you trust. Find about 10 people and ask each of them to THINK of a number between 1 and 10. Then, bet a dollar (please don't bet more) and pick odd or even. After you announce odd or even they announce what was the number they thought of. Repeat this several times and see if you are satisfied. is this too extreme? Perhaps it is, but trusting EVERYONE with a dice roller app may be closer to this experiment than to rolling manual dice.
The probability of cheating goes up as potential benefits go up and as the risk of being caught goes down. In every post, you imply that they are the same everywhere, but it is far from the truth. If you create an environment in which it is very easy to cheat and virtually no chance of being caught, you won't have to wait long before someone takes advantage of that. Also, you won't have to wait long until bad dudes are attracted by new opportunities.
Of course, you can ask to play on a neutral device, but many won't ask just because doing so is almost insulting. Some may choose not to use the app at all, so they are not put in a position where they accept to play against one but refuse against others. For example, I would pay twice as much for a secure app but scratch my head if I want to install an insecure app for this very reason. I don't know how many other players feel the same way, but it sounds like investing some time in this area may be a good business decision.
Call me paranoid if you wish.
