I like this protocol, in fact it would still be OK with me if it's made simpler, without a dedicated server or emails:
1. Before the match both players enter a number into the app in secrecy, the numbers are combined to generate the seed for the PRNG
2. After the match both numbers are revealed which makes it possible to regenerate the whole sequence to make sure there is no manipulation.
Of course this solution has it's drawbacks: - it eliminates the possibility of using truly random numbers, like these provided by random.org, because it would be impossible to regenerate the sequence. I do think that pseudo-random numbers are perfectly fine for our purposes, though.
- it doesn't eliminate the possibility that a player with a hacked version would be informed in advance what numbers are coming next, but it's OK for me because: 1) it would require collusion (I would insist that the owner of the dice app isn't wearing headphones) 2) the moves that result in using this information would often stand out
For me, such a simple addition to the dice app would make "trust issues" comparable to using physical dice (which means that I would generally be happy to play using dice app against people I don't know)
