With 2 outs and score tied in ninth any single drives him home is shaky. First of all you meant to say single to the oufield. But in that situation the outfielders would play mush shallower. A stronger play also can be made to throw out the runner because they are not worried so much about the ball getting behind them. Unlike earlier innings there is no disadvatange in the runner advancing and thus the ball can be charged more aggresively.
