Baseball by the Book - You're the manager

This question has a lot of missing variables that will swing the answer one way or another, such as:

  • Who's on first? No, no, no ... not the Abbott & Costello routine, can Who run? If you've got a speedster on first base it may be best to give him a pitch or two to try to take second.
  • Who's up to bat? A particularly slow runner (catcher), someone prone to hit into double plays, or if you don't substitute your reliever for some insane reason you may want to push the runner over instead of allowing the batter to bat.
  • Is the batter himself a fast runner? A leftie? A speedy leftie bunting is much more likely to turn that bunt into a hit esp. if the infield isn't playing in.
  • There are insane stats managers have available to them nowadays such as batting avg. of current batter v. lefties/righties, v. certain pitchers, with men on, with men in scoring position, etc...

There are I'm sure more variables than that, those are the ones that came to me on the fly. I think it's very clear in a general scenario not to bunt, but since I was at a Reds' game last week and a debate broke out. If there were 0 outs then I'd have no problem bunting him over, but with 1 out I think it's a completely different ballgame. If you bunt him over you're basically saying that the next guy up is more likely to get a single that scores the runner than with 1 out the next two (+) guys get a hit(s) to bring him home. I don't think it's close, no bunt unless there are other variables like speedy leftie up to bat.
