Does XG play 2-away,2-away "automatic" double correctly?

I've read (and accepted on faith) that when the score is 2-away,2-away, and the players are of equal strength, the players should double at the first available opportunity.
I open with a 53 and make the 22 point. I thought it would be correct for my opponent to double.
It looks like XG does not subscribe to that view.
Did I misunderstand the concept?
