This is a pretty unusual position. While it's not too uncommon for both players to partially crunch their boards while playing "chicken" in the outfield, the presence of White's straggler and Blue's bar point is an unusual additional feature.
The score makes a difference. Blue could lose the match if White gets in a recube to 4 and wins a gammon. It may not be immediately apparent that 7/3 4/1 loses fewer gammons than 7/4 7/3, but 4/1 does make a four-point board and eliminates the possibility of that blot getting picked up later. In some variations, Blue is also happy that he has that checker on the 7pt to play a large number.
