chouette rotation

I am glad that you brought this up Kevin. As Michael and I are new to the backgammon scene, we have had the opportunity to come in with "new eyes". We have experienced several different ways that clubs sort out rotation and winners.
I don't mind the variation when visiting, but I enjoy discussing what makes the most balanced game.
I recently learned that Chouette in the beginning was played with a single cube and the captain made the doubling decision for the crew -- a one against one, with advisors, situation. The game evolved to individual cubes for each crew member -- becoming a one against many situation. It seems to me that the, drop-the-captain-lose-the-box rule is a vestige of the old ways. With only one cube that would be the case. With individual cubes, I can't see any good reason reason for the captain's cube to be weighted differently than other cubes. I think it hurts the balance by allowing the captain's cube to wield more power than other cubes.
IMHO, it seems more balanced to weigh all cubes equally. The box's winning conditions then become 1) Win the game (actually win by taking all checkers off or doubling out ALL opponents) and 2) Maintaining positive (or zero) equity, meaning that your points are not negative. Some clubs say that you need at least one point.
