If you're making all cubes equal, and the box is essentially playing "one" opponent, then wouldn't the captain take over the box if the crew makes a profit, even if the captain loses?

Also, I think the captain isn't equal to all the rest of the crew when, depending on local rules, checker plays are his decision and initial cube decisions are often made from the bottom of the rotation up.
