Why it is important for all USBGF members to vote

A good tournament rule set is important. The total experience and enjoyment of all in attendance at a tournament can either be enhanced, or it can be diminished as a direct result of the quality of the rules in use. As a result of the unprecedented level of collaboration and engagement between the USBGF, tournament directors and the backgammon community, combined with a transparent process, it is my opinion that the set of rules that we have all developed together is excellent. No set of rules of tournament backgammon can possibly exist where 100% of the people will prefer 100% of the rules. I therefore encourage everyone to look at the full body of work when forming your own opinion.
But perhaps even more important than the USBGF having good rules is for the USBGF to have good public governance when it comes to making decisions that can have a large impact on the backgammon community (like rules). The way in which these Rules were developed was a rather radical departure from the last attempt to do the same in 2016. This time, we engaged the directors up front in the rules drafting process; we proposed the rules to the public, rather than decreeing them; we detailed the changes and provided reasons; we sought public comment on the rules before they were finalized; we revised the proposed rules based on public comment; and we have transparently documented and published all rule change proposals received and responded to each and every one of them with the reasons for each decision. It is a heck of a lot more work to do things this way rather than simply trying to make good decisions behind closed doors and announcing the result. But this is the way good public government is supposed to work. We owe you that. This is the kind of practice I’d like to see more of in the future from the USBGF. Wouldn’t you? That is why you should vote. This vote isn’t just about supporting or not supporting a set of rules. This vote is about expressing your support for good public governance, and that We the People of this backgammon community want this kind of good governance to continue. Through our vote here, we express a desire to remain included in that process.
