I think this summarizes the situation pretty well. Suppose, for the sake of argument, that 20% of players feel strongly enough about the die-on-a-checker rule to vote against a set of rules they would otherwise support. That may not be enough to sink the rules but it could mean the difference of say:

(a) a 55-45 vote in favor of the rules with die-on-checker versus
(b) a 75-25 vote in favor of the rules without die-on-checker.

It would be much better to have rules that enjoy the support of the vast majority of players.

And Bill brings up another point: When different rules are played in different parts of the world, it can lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings at tournaments where players are not used to the local rules.
