"Rolling for it"

I am not a big fan a director ruling that players should "roll for it" when it is not clear what ruling should be made. I can see why directors like to do this -- it gets them off the hook (sort of) when they have a tough ruling to make. But rules aren't just for directors, they are for players too.

If there is no compelling evidence to rule one way or the other, director should bite the bullet and simply say: "Fred, I think there is a good chance you are right in this case, but there is also a legitimate reason for disagreement. At the end of the day, the onus is on the checker-shuffler to move his checkers clearly, in a way that the opposing player can follow. So I will rule against you this time."
