Bravo, Phil.

As everyone knows there is very little Phil and I can ever agree on and we don't really have much use for each other. But on this topic he is spot on.

I have been a very vocal critic on the Board and otherwise of the new proposed USBGF Rules. We were much closer to achieving something with the 2016 USBGF Rules which conformed, by design, greatly in structure and content to the EU, UK, and Danish rules. They would have served us well and would have contributed hugely toward the beginning of consideration of an international rule set. Dorn Bishop and others spent two years -- working with Raj Jansari (the author of the UK and EU rules) and others -- in the development of the 2016 Rules. The plug was pulled on them four months into a designed twelve month trial/transition phase. Initial use in at least five tournaments was very encouraging and without incident; however, some influential tournament directors were not even willing to try the rules and demanded they be scrapped. The USBGF caved.

The USBGF must be focused on national, primarily, and international, secondarily, interests associated with the growth, promotion, and development of the game. We should not allow ourselves to be distracted, derailed, and misdirected by the personal interests of individual players and tournament directors -- and that is what has happened.

If you try to satisfy everyone you will satisfy no one. Some on the Board need to recognize and accept this fact.

I think the membership expects leadership and direction from an elected, representative, accountable Board of Directors. In my opinion they do not desire acquiescence, pliability, accommodation, and compromise toward every special interest. Public comment and consideration is appropriate, but the responsibilities of the elected USBGF Board must not be ceded to other, non-elected individuals with personal interests primarily in mind.

I have heard members of the Board, in response to my pleadings on international conformity, state that the world will be so pleased with our new rules that they will all rush to adopt them also. Somehow I doubt that will happen; however, that is the mindset of some we must deal with.

The Board, including the Chairman of the Rules and Ethics Committee, know and freely admit the new proposed rules are inferior. "In the end, who cares if they are a somewhat incomplete and short set of rules ...". That's the spirit.

No doubt the proposed rules will pass and we will have taken a giant step backwards. If the damage is not irreparable, I look forward to the day we can begin to move forward again.
