I would rather dice collided with chequers at the other end of the board, which can offer many different angles to deflect, than with the flat bar, especially as the dice have to travel further to get there. Further, rolling hard into the bar on some boards will cause dice to jump the bar.

I have definitely heard other players comment negatively on how someone (generally) rolls across the board rather than down it. (Of course, these grumbles were not said to that player.)
