I'd recommend Woolsey's two "The Backgammon Encyclopedia" books for a firm understanding of doubling strategy.

Or, if you don't like him, Gaby Horowitz' "Dynamic Cube Strategy" paired with Becker's "Backgammon for Blood" will drain his bank account very nicely.
