My experience with GNU in these position types indicates that its play improves once the game starts to look like something normal..ie some chances to contain and make a board to in NN's. Perhaps GNU is playing better when we delay the shot bcuz it often has more builders in place but it can't play as well after hitting the quick shot, in comparison to Snowie.

My thoughts for what they are worth

I had the same thoughts, but was (and am) not sure how much better Gnubg plays after one play or the other. I think that any 'expert' who watches 2-ply play out the position a few times after both plays will see many questionable plays, including some that are clearly wrong. Not that the 'experts' would agree ...
