Subtract 4.
Suppose you start off being four pips behind in the race and then you and your opponent roll 8 over and over again ( and nobody gets hit or bears off with wastage). If you subtract 4, it shows you are even.
Then, you roll an 8, and now you are ahead in the race. Your opponent is four down and on roll, so subtract 4 from her count. It shows that you remain even.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
