white has the timing to wait for a shot. Blue can take great care in bearing off, as blue is almost guaranteed a gammon if blue can avoid being hit. The danger of leaving a shot is highest when blue has 8 or 9 checkers remaining, which will be the case if blue rips 4.

4/3*(4) looks t0 be the safest play, as all numbers play well for the next roll, and possibly for a few rolls after that.
