Midgame 64

The first play we have to consider is 14/8 6/2. One of my many bg sayings is get ahead in the race, and race. Building on this idea once everyone has escaped and we're way up in the race we should play safe. This position is a good example of why axioms in backgammon need to be taken with a grain of salt. While everything I've stated so far is true, the problem is we have little chance of bringing this position home without leaving shots in the future if we fugly up our position now with 8, 2.

Another key feature that makes 8, 2 wrong in this position is the opponent has no offensive development whatsoever. It will be interesting to see this position and then the variant with the opponent having the 5pt made. I imagine that will be a pretty big swing in favor of the ever so fugly 8, 2.

With 8, 2 out of the way in our original problem we now come to 13/3* and 14/4. 13/3* develops the heavily stacked midpoint while putting the opponent on the bar and he's more likely to enter on a higher point than a lower one. How many shots does it leave though? 17 it seems. That's kind of a lot when we'd rather be missed.

How about 14/4? Significantly less shots immediately though the clean up is not as assured as the other play is. Failure to develop the midpoint isn't a big deal but worth mentioning and failure to push the opponent forward gives us a frowny face :( Still, I think 6 extra shots are too many to be compensated by the other minor factors and would make 14/4 my play. I would be eyeing the cube soon too assuming I'm missed.
