The score means gammons barely matter, but even at a level score blue wins a gammon almost every time he bears off without being hit.

However, backgammons matter quite a lot and ripping off two should win more of those, and after taking off two he's pretty much guaranteed to have ten off if he's hit. That gives him something like 77% to win the game if he's hit and closed out on the bar. So, it's not much of a risk.
