Carter Won it ALL!!!!

I doubt that anyone in the world has played Carter more than I have, so I can speak with some authority.
He "DESERVED" to win this tournament.
And it goes without saying, that as his good friend, I am also very happy for him and proud of him (and pissed I wasn't there because if I were there I would have had 10 percent of his action as he and I always take 10 percent of each other!)
Why did he "deserve" to win? Many will say he was just lucky. Many argue that the best player deserves to win.
I don't think anyone doubts who the best player was: Mochy. And of course, there are several others who are not far behind Mochy (Michy, Akiko, Wachtel, Jorgen and several others) that might well have "deserved" to win. The good news is that Mochy and the others who play better than the rest do win often, and when they don't win they often cash or win side events.
But again, why did Carter deserve to win?
First, because in spite of the fact that he is not as good as top players in the world, how many people in the world have spent the time and money and effort that Carter has going around the world to play in these great tournaments? The law of averages says that just because he keeps trying, in spite of the fact that his odds are not as high as "the best" in the world, he deserves to win once in a while. That it happened at the biggest and most lucrative tournament is only justice for all of his investment of time, energy, and money. And of course, he is a good player and should win once in a while.
Secondly, he deserves to win because in spite of knowing that his odds against a player like Lars (in the finals) are against him, he has no fear of playing him and give and taking cubes, taking risks, and putting himself out there and giving it his best. I didn't watch the whole match, but even Carter would not bet that he outplayed Lars (PR), but he is not afraid to compete with the best and take his chances.
Third, I don't know anyone who plays the game with more enthusiasm and passion than Carter. What he might lack in pure skill (and he is a fine player, don't get me wrong), he more than makes up in staying focussed, optimistic, creative, present, and often, intimidating. (You don't give non-doubles to Carter hoping he will make the mistake of passing!) This gives him an edge that many Giants could do well to study and apply in their own games.
And lastly, he deserves to win because few people in the game love and enjoy playing backgammon and competing as much as he does. I know that anyone who wins Cyprus would be thrilled to win the title and the money, but I promise you no one would enjoy it more than Carter. In fact, I plan to avoid him for the next few days because I am not sure I can stand to hear about all of his victories and success....again, not because I am jealous, as I am truly happy for him, but his enthusiasm and excitement over this win will probably not fade until his last breath.
Nice to see the win go to someone like that, isn't it?
Congratulations, my good friend, for a well-deserved win.
