Tourney resistance to computer improvements

I agree that using computers to play the game could have many of the benefits you mention. Dice rolled nearly instantaneously and never cocked is a big advantage. No arguments on what was rolled or about legality of a play is a big advantage. Record of game is nice. Some will miss the tactile sensation of rolling and physically moving the pieces. That is no big deal to me though.
All those advantages can occur though without use of the pipcounter. Have the computer give a clock on the match and you still have your desired ability to either play longer matches or increase the field size. If someone wants to use their time pipcounting that is their choice.
You consider pipcounting a bean counting exercise. But would not counting of shots also be? What about calculation of take points based on a MET? What about calcuation of EPC? All of those can be given by the computer. Which of those do you feel one should get from the computer in your computer based tournament matches? If you decide on only some of them you've drawn the line in an arbitrary place.
I think my biggest disagreement is that I consider the ability to quickly count pips in clocked matches a backgammon skill whereas you do not.
