Thanks Nack for the time and the lengthy explanation. I took quite some time digesting what you wrote, and while your argument is much more detailed and quantitative than the way I think about BG positions, you are right that I failed to account for the relative difficulty in improving naturally (without the slot) in Variant 4. That is an argument in favor of the slot in Variant 4 that I missed.
