Hi Christian,
Do you recommend adjusting for uneven/ugly positions before using Nack57 or is it best to just use the raw pip counts?
Yes, adjust first. (Keith or whatever.) Then you're set to go.
The innovation of Nack57 was to precisely replicate the GST = Gold Standard Table (and later what I call the Neil-modified GST, causing me to upgrade to –32) for leader counts of 55 or higher (or I call it "57 or higher" just to make it easier to remember -- there's a successful overlap between and including 55 to 61 as I recall, so it comes to the same thing).
For counts lower than 55 (or 57), I've added nothing theoretically new, but by nice coincidence Trice's subt5 div7 (round down) inculcates that same "5 7" theme, which can thus be easily remembered. That said, for this short a race, if you have a formula you like better than Trice's, use that one instead.
It is the lower-count positions for which ugly-position adjustments are typically necessary, but it can sometimes happen (for one or both sides) at 55+ pip positions.
Can the formula be extended to also help figure out when/if I have a cube, just like the Keith count?Sure. Make your ugly-position adjustments (using Keith or whatever your favorite), then apply Nack57, which gives you the "last take point." Then, if desired, subtract 3 for (first point of) double, or subtract 2 for redouble.
(In Trice's table for counts much lower than 55, there's a point at which it becomes subtract 2 for double, 1 for redouble, or 2 for both, which I had memorized at one time. I'd have to find my notes for that.)
This –3, –2, adjustment to get from take to double, redouble, is pretty standard. For example (for Trice's stated threshold of 62+ leader counts), if you use 10%+2 to get the take point, you would subtract 3 to double or subtract 2 to redouble. (Some might be more familiar with 10%–1 to double, and add 1 or 3 to redouble or take, but obviously it comes to the same thing.)
In comparison, though, Nack57 cleans up the dozen+ specific counts where Trice's 10%+2 is off by a pip (or by more than a pip at very high counts).
