Pip counting is a skill. Players who can count pips fast and accurately have an edge over players who don't. They can use their time to think about other things. Counting pips for any position in, say, ten seconds or less, is something any player can learn how to do with just a few hours of practice. For players whose experience is almost exclusively online or at-home on a computer, that learning will probably best be started by turning the automatic pip counter off. The first attempts at unassisted pip counting may be very tedious. But it's really not very hard to do.
