Tourney resistance to computer improvements

In Response To: Tourney resistance to computer improvements (Daniel Murphy)

I thank all who have responded to my question about auto pip counting. I accept that many believe that manual pip counting is an important aspect of backgammon. I have three questions to those who strongly support manual pip counting:

1. Have you played a lot of online backgammon where auto pip counting is mandatory?

2. Is your backgammon experience noticeably less enjoyable due to auto pip counting?

3. While playing online, do you feel that something important is missing?

I have admitted that my backgammon experience is primarily online. I stopped playing a few months ago due to frustration of poor action. However, I use to play over 500 games per month. I have only attended two live tourneys.

I felt that something very important was missing in live tourney play. The inability to evaluate my matches and learn from my mistakes was missing. In fact, I felt naked without bot evaluation of my play. However, the Lisle, IL tournaments were very well organized and I truly enjoyed meeting GU and BGOnline members.

Now, I play a lot of Snowie and GNU five point and eleven point matches with auto pip counting. It only takes 15 to 20 minutes to play an eleven point match. If I turned off pip counting and counted pips, it would take a bit longer. As before, I will practice pip counting before my next tourney. But, unlike others I just do not find pip counting that interesting.

I briefly mentioned my present and past backgammon experience to explain how I truly miss the inability for bot evaluation at live tourneys. Others with considerable real board experience, do you have a similar emptiness during online play due to the lack of manual pip counting?

Stanley
