It is not only whether or not you can split, together with the cover: it is also whether you can cover at all (or need to make an inferior point), or whether you cover ugly while exposing more blots to indirects (43 - the covering 8/5 strips the 8, 13/9 creates more vulnerability). If you cover you want to have a reasonably good PvP, so good points, good spares, limited likelihood of having more checkers sned back behind the prime, and direct escaping numbers.
