"Terje - “You can also get 'live transcription' of your online matches from gnu backgammon on Backgammon Studio”.
I think this is another moot point in this particular thread. Don’t get me wrong - this is a nice feature for online matches played via the computer interface on your excellent site. But it is not really relevant as we are discussing the potential for automating transcription of typical live matches, referencing a pre-recorded video file here."
It was relevant in context of Bob Koka's response: "Also ability to play via computer interface already exists". Ie. Online + evaluation.
Sure it is perhaps answering a different question: "Why do you transcribe matches in the first place?" One of the answers would be that it is to learn from your mistakes. You can do that by playing against XG or GNU which will immediately tell you if you made an error. This immediate feedback just as you reasoned your way towards the correct move which turned out to be wrong is likely to be better than reviewing a transcribed match hours or days after the match was played. What were you thinking about at the time you played the wrong move? That is much more difficult to tell at this point than seconds afterwards.
Why not just play against bots then? Playing against another human opponent is uniquely different than playing against bots so you'll be presented with a much wider range of positions. Backgammon Studio offers the best of both worlds by allowing you to play against other human players and get the bot evaluation of the moves.
I'll welcome automated transcription with open arms when it becomes available! You'll soon find out that you're going to need a database to put all those matches in so that you can easily extract the interesting positions in a more automated fashion than going through one xg file at a time. I know where you can find one! :-)
Speaking of transcriptions. I transcribed another match earlier today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfxaU5_CLjI and Bill Patterson sent me a lot of matches from Texas Open and Nick Blasier uploaded all his matches from the same tournament. Also John O'Hagan just sent me his two matches from Texas Open. Thanks a lot! Manual transcription of live matches isn't dead yet! :-)
Best regards,
TP
