In Response To: Barry Siliman Appreciation Day (Bob Koca)

We presented Barry with an IOU for a Gift Certificate for an entry to the Michigan ABT and/or Backgammon a la Carte....his choice!

Barry "retired" from directing the Beltway BG Club late 2017... Larry Brown has stepped into the role! Below is the text of the remarks (minus a few ad-libs).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barry started directing the club a little before January 2001. He took over from Bill Pow and continued the legacy of David Montgomery and Barry Steinberg.

At the time Barry was a novice tournament director and probably a mid-level intermediate backgammon player. In his eighteen years directing the club, he has grown into “World Class” status as both a director and a player. As a director, he treats each of us as his guest and friend.

Not only does Barry direct the tournament with ease, he plays world class backgammon despite all the interruptions of match reporting, dispute resolution, and complaining. He even had to deal with an overbearing Chef at one of the venues we played at for a very short time. All the while, he is a constant source of “entertaining” chatter, even during his own matches. (He does seem to be quieter while playing Bob Koca, but that is relative).

There are been at least 358 Tournaments under his leadership of the Beltway Club. He personally directed and played in 277 those plus directed one or two that he did not play in. The tournaments he did not direct, he secured the venue, got a commitment from the substitute director, provided the substitute with a package of draw sheets, score sheets, pencils, etc. How many of us are there? Including Barry, we add up to 375 unique individuals, a total of 4770 tournament entries and 8091 matches. Where did this data come from? Barry would say that I stole it from his web site. Think about the time Barry spent for each tournament:

1) Updating and gathering his materials. 2) Two hour round trip commute from Walkersville (wherever that is) 3) Getting to the venue an hour before tourney start-time. 4) Staying until the tournament completion (even when he goes 0-2), up to 8-9 hours in the last couple of years. 5) Documenting the results of each match on the BeltwayBG permanent record.

My estimate is that before during and after each tournament Barry spent about 3600 hours working for us.

BARRY VOLUNTEERED A TOTAL OF TWO LABOR YEARS WORTH OF EFFORT. YOU WOULD ALMOST THINK HE WAS A LIBERAL!!!
