Tricky transcription!

Hi!

For the most part the streaming was awesome with great commentaries but a couple of accidents did happen (hard to avoid). In one of the matches:

Gibraltar Backgammon 2018 Carter Mattig Vs Eric Mcalpine 08 02 18

The video ad was running for the first 3 minutes of the match and all you saw was a thumbnail view of the match:

And then you got the actual board displayed:

That is a lot of moves lost! What to do? I guess the easiest option is just to start the transcription at this point and give up on the start. Or...

I decided to take a stab at reconstucting the start from the visual clues you do get in the thumbnail version of the match. Forget about the dice you can hardly see the board either! :-)

I started out entering what I though was being played along with the dice:

eric 6/2 24/18 13/11 carter 6/3 13/7* 24/21
eric 1/4 bar/24 8/4* carter 2/2 bar/21* 6/4(2)
eric 2/5 bar/7* carter 2/6 bar/23 13/7*
eric 3/4 bar/7* carter 2/1 bar/23 8/7*
eric 1/6 bar/7* carter 5/1 bar/20 21/20
eric 1/4 18/13 carter 5/2 13/7 24/22?
eric 6/5 24/13 carter 6/4 20/10*
eric 55 bar/15* 8/3(2)*

And then as I went along I changed the moves/dice if I found that there won't be a checker at the right spot for the next move to be possible. Once I was happy with the result I started to enter it in XG and in a couple of cases I got some monster errors so I changed the dice so that there was either no error played or a very small error. After a couple of more corrections I could finally start transcribing the match as normal. Tricky!

I hear rumour (and you almost never hear that rumour! hehe) that Carter is getting 50 this year so consider this my birthday present! I'm a generous guy! :-)

You could scream that you can't do that! And you probably shouldn't unless you have a good idea what is going on and be willing to throw everything away if you can't come up with a good final result that doesn't include some very bad moves by the players.

Now there are 5 more matches from Gibraltar Open in the database! Which ones? Head over to Backgammon Studio and find out! :-)

Best regards,
TP

PS. I don't have the contact info to Eric and Carter so tell them they now have one more reason to visit Backgammon Studio! :-)
