Nice analysis, and I agree with everything you say about serve and volley on clay. One thing folks might not pick up on is that the volleyer's shot is essentially the same, regardless of surface, since he's taking the ball before the bounce. But the returner gets more time to get to the shot and can do more with his return as a result. So it's harder to hit a winning volley -- the clay court actually magnifies the "modern game" factors you discussed.
