Thanks, that covered exactly everything that I was going to post. As witnessed, this play OtB is automatic for most people, 23, 8, as they see the undeveloped stack on the midpoint and stripped 8pt and make the 'natural' play. Thing is, once the opponent has made an advanced anchor those priorities drop way down assuming our back men aren't yet mobilized.

If we make the small split the opponent can make any damn point he wants whether it be the bar pt, 5pt, 4pt, you get the idea. When we split to the bar we force the issue. We force our opponent to either deal with that blot now on his bar pt. or give us serious counter play when he doesn't. If he doesn't hit/point on us and instead were to make one of the other points we now have sixes to anchor up and fives to get a man the hell out of dodge.
