Why the obsession with forcing early cube commitment?

Stick: The doubling cube is like a bet in poker and the intent to bet or use it can illicit the same types of responses as Phil has said.
Is this really a thing? Do you (or anyone) actually do this in a game? For example, when it is your turn and you pause, look at the score sheet, look back at the board, maybe give a sigh, can you learn something from an opponent's reaction?
I see poker players on TV playing with their chips all the time -- picking them up, restacking them, shuffling them. Compared with that, making an adjustment of the cube on the side of the board seems tame.
It feels like the cube rule was put in place by more experienced players to intimidate newer players or even trap them into making cube decisions they really didn't want to make.
