Blue trails in the race and has more men back. This calls for a bold play. Making the five and leaving the twenty slotted is the bolder play. It improves the relative board strenths and covers the inner and outer boards.

Making the twenty point is safer for both players. Blue doesn't risk getting pointed on; White can play behind Blue and any hits are less damaging.
