+1 to the "More Swiss" format being great value for the money. As Fatboy said, you get a lot of play guaranteed, and knowing when your next match starts gives you more freedom to socialize, discuss positions/strategy, and snack with other players in the time between matches.

The "middle" (7 to 9 PR, or like, mid-1600s to mid-1700s on Grid if that's more your style) is a tricky place to be. It really comes down to personal preference and comfort with spending the money in that range, and eligibility committees should probably respect that unless there's solid evidence otherwise (no, "so-and-so cashed once in intermediate before" doesn't count).

From my experience, I moved up at San Antonio 2018 and flunked out 0-3. I decided to try Open again in Chicago, and despite my nervousness about the field strength, managed a decent showing and will stay in the Open flight. As others have pointed out, the difference in Chicago was pretty big, but is not particularly large at other tournaments. When one factors in travel costs, the difference in total expense between the two may only be marginally higher at a given tournament and is a decent opportunity for the curious to try the Open.
