Maybe we could do it like they do in Chess Opens where there are extra prizes according to ratings groups - that of course means the directors of a backgammon tournament would have to decide who are the "in between" people are. That way people who think like you, would want to play Open but know they have little chance against the big guns, would still have a good chance to play for the ratings prizes.

That way you might end up with 4/7 and still win first in the ratings section. I understand this might be too complicated without a reliable ratings system.
