Using common sense what would you guess the EPC for the side on roll? You already noted that a pure 6 roll would be 7(6)+1 or 43. On average is it more or less than a 7 roll? Assuming it's less since we have one miss to manage our gap and knowing that a 7 roll would be 7(7)+1 or 50 now ask yourself the question is it closer in your mind to a 6 roll on average or 7 roll or smack dab in the middle?

Yes, there are perhaps more precise methods and formulas to figure out this kind of thing but I think people often make things more complicated than they need be. It reminds me of the story of François Tardieu I heard where he was facing a cube and he went into the tank to do all the intricate calculations that François is able to do and ended up taking. If he had ever simply looked at the position he'd have realized it was a stone cold drop. Instead he jumped right into Max Cohen's head to solve a problem that wasn't a problem.
