Baffle Boxes--Good reasons not to use them--and a plea to Mary Hickey

In Response To: Baffle Boxes (mamabear)

I do understand why some people object to using a baffle box. Different strokes for different folks. That doesn't mean they are bad people. I do not demonize people who disagree with me....there is far too much of that in this society.

I recognize that some people who object to a baffle box simply lack IQ, so who am I to berate them?

There are some who like to shake the dice in their cups for dozens of times, as this can be quite irritating to their opponent, or they like to shake while their opponent is thinking...also quite irritating. I can see why they don't want to lose that edge by using a baffle box and no cups.

Some people love to roll the dice on top of the checkers or even completely off the board. I play with some people who do this repeatedly. They are either too dumb to realize that if they don't roll so hard this won't happen, or they do it on purpose to irritate their opponents or throw another variable into the game. Who am I to stop them from this pleasure?

I play with a couple of people who don't shake their dice after they roll a great roll or a double, hoping their lack of shaking will cause a repeat. Now, they might not be successful with such a ploy, but again, how irritating is it to their opponents when they do this? Why deprive them of this pleasure? They get a lot of pleasure out of thinking they are getting an unfair edge...why shouldn't they have this sly ploy in their bag?

And of course, their are people who really do cheat. They lay their cup on the table or palm a die or do all kinds of funny things (I have watched videos of people who can cheat this way) to get the rolls they need. Or they have a die land that they don't want and make sure the second die is off the table. Again, this is a real tough skill to develop, and they should be rewarded for their ability and guts to take this risk.

Lastly, there are some who simply say, "I just like shaking and rolling. I've always done it this way and I don't want to change." Or I don't like that the box partially blocks the board for spectators who are stupid enough to sit right behind the box and won't move their ass.

Okay, how can I possibly argue against this? It is unpatriotic to suggest that maybe the game has changed and there are ways to improve things that, even if they don't particularly like it, most others do and it is a great improvement to the fairness and aesthetics of the game for most of us, so please go along with it and get used to it and maybe you will like it or at least not mind it if you try it for a while.

So I have no argument for people who say they just don't like it. And again, I will not demonize them or hate them. I love Mary Hickey, even if she won't use the box because she just doesn't like it. But I wish someday she will change her mind if for no other reason than the rest of us enjoy the game much more using the box. There are many things I would do for Mary if it made her feel better. Is this so much to ask?

In the meantime, I am working on a catapult that throws the dice onto the board from a distance, through an elevated baffle box away from the board, so that I can get Mary Hickey to agree to use something new that many of us believe greatly improves the game. I'll let you know when it's ready.
