Backgammon is an extremely aggravating game because you will always lose to fish no matter how good you become.
I wonder why everybody is talking about this in a glass half-empty sort of way. There are always players better than me... even MUCH better than me. I find it exciting to be able to beat some of them now and then. I'm no idiot though... I KNOW that when it happens, I almost certainly did it by better luck rather than outplaying them. It still makes it fun, though. I know that when I walk into the room, I'm a real threat to win the tournament without ever being a real threat to be the best player in the room.
I can study for every waking moment for the rest of my life, and I will never ever beat (even once) a world-class chess or go player. Not even close.
So I don't bother to answer the kind of questions originally posed.
