Frustrating Rolls

In your 53 example, the key difference is that there are ZERO rolls where the other die does not matter. You ALWAYS have to use both dice to hit. In the example you give in this post, there ARE rolls where the other die does not matter.
That's why I like Karol's definition better, and I do not think it is ambiguous at all. If you have a checker on the bar, and you roll only one die, that number has to be played by the checker on the bar. So the only way to have a direct shot is a blot in opp's inner board. If the inner board is closed, obviously no direct shot. In your new example, if you roll one die, you can hit with a 3. Thus a direct shot.
I don't care that you cannot legally roll only one die, and I don't see why that diminishes the definition in any way.
Likewise, why do doublets matter at all in either definition? We are not trying to determine what happens on every possible roll. We are only defining the minimum requirement for a direct shot. If you can hit by only rolling 1 die, then the checker must be withing 6 pips. So hitting with 22 requires the checker to be 2, 4 or 6 pips away. This will be a direct shot with either definition.
