I see where you're coming from, but your definition and mine come to radically different conclusions about what constitutes a "direct shot".

If I understand the differences correctly:

1.

White is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 148
Unlimited Game
Jacoby
pip: 28
score: 0

Blue is Player 1
XGID=-a--A-------bbbbb----bb-A-:0:0:1:00:0:0:1:0:10
Blue on roll, cube action?

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Your definition: NO? (I'm not not clear if this is a constraint in your system, but every legal hit requires the other checker to be played in a particular way)
My definition: YES

2.

White is Player 2

Jacoby
pip: 38

Blue is Player 1
XGID=----------a--A-----b-bbbbA:0:0:1:00:0:0:1:0:10
Blue on roll, cube action?

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Your definition: NO (the 3-hit requires the other die to be a 5)
My definition: YES (there's a chance of a hit from a single number on one die. Note: 53 is a direct shot; 55 isn't)

3.

Blue is Player 1
XGID=-------------aaaaaaA-----A:0:0:1:00:0:0:1:0:10
Blue on roll, cube action?

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Your definition: NO(!?) (The single dice roll is wasted bringing a checker in. "So the only way to have a direct shot [from the roof] is a blot in opp's inner board")
My definition: YES!

Blue is Player 1
XGID=-abb-bbA----------bbb---A-:0:0:1:00:0:0:1:0:10
Blue on roll, cube action?

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Your definition: YES (33 works - doubles don't matter; and possibly any 6, even though there's no legal way to hit with a 6 with TWO dice)
My definition: NO (the only legal hitting number is 33 as all sixes must be used to escape the back checker. Two 3s must be used here to hit, so this is 'indirect')

eXtreme Gammon Version: 2.10

Your definition: NO? (The only legal hit is 22, which requires both checkers to be moved in a particular way)
My definition: YES

Personally, I don't find your definition simple or unambiguous in the many situations routinely encountered over the board where BOTH dice rolls determine whether you can hit a shot.

At very least in situation 3, it seems to me your definition/method contravenes the commonly held intuition. (Next time you're captain in a chouette in this predicament, try saying, "Not to worry; at least we don't leave any direct shots!")

This is more than a semantic wrangle for me. I genuinely want to understand whether the way I've been using the "direct shot" phrase for years corresponds to the BG community's general understanding. What do others think?

Matt.
