Some of your examples point up why I prefer Karol's definition. I think I hurt my argument when I started talking about zero legal hits without using both dice. That really isn't part of the definition, and would only apply when there is a checker on the bar. I was using it more to point out a weakness/ambiguity in the "single number from one die" language in the definition from bkgm.com.
If we look at the "roll a single die" definition, your examples 2 and 3 would not be direct shots. The rest would.
Note that under this definition, it is not possible to concoct a "direct shot" with zero hits, since you can always hit with the appropriate doublet, if nothing else. In fact, Ray confirms this by saying the fewest shot is 3. I would love to try to find a position where you can only hit with the doublet, but I now have no need to, since I will always believe Ray on this sort of thing.
