Ok, I'll give this a shot although I may be way off base.

Gammon losses don't matter AtS. The passive 7/1 7/6 allows white to run out with a seven pip lead. Blue really doesn't want to allow white to run out and turn this into a straight race.

By hitting with 7/1 (forced) 4/3*, it means that either white dances and allows blue to go ahead in the race, or white hits when entering giving blue additional contact. ~70% of the time white stays on the roof giving blue ample opportunity to close the board or lift the blot. The other ~30% blue would rather be hit and maintain contact than let white escape.

Hitting is clear AtS. At a "normal" score it's a tougher call.
