There are always players better than me... even MUCH better than me
Maybe some of us don't believe there are players MUCH better than us. I don't find it exciting in either field, poker or backgammon, to beat someone who is theoretically better than me. Why is that? Idk ... I can sit here all day & play SW or GNU and I know they're better than me but I can own them up enough of the time that it doesn't seem like a miracle when I win, it seems normal. Same with cards, I never consider myself a big dog to anyone in a card game, so the excitement of beating them would only come from the $$$.
I can study for every waking moment for the rest of my life, and I will never ever beat (even once) a world-class chess or go player. Not even close
Speak for yourself, I'd never agree to that. I know the theory behind it all that states I shouldn't be able to get to that level, the theory can kiss my rosey red ass.
