This variant reminds me very much of when I first tried out the game, briefly, some time in the mid to late 70's (ie during the boom). We didn't know all the rules, thinking that, in order to bear off, you had to roll the exact number. Hence, a player with no chequers higher than the ace point needed aces to bear off.

This certainly made the phase before the bear-off less important! That phase is the skilful phase of course, and reducing the importance of this is the consequence of a variant that keeps the game alive for longer. The variant proposed is less straightforward of course - so I wonder why you wouldn't just play the method I described?

Maybe a better way to keep each game alive for longer IMHO would be this: Instead of counting doubles twice they count once only, but you get to roll again, repeating this without limit.

Am still happy with the regular game though!
