This is applicable for humans achieving world class chess: you must 1) have the native brain capacity and 2) start young.
I agree with 2). I am not sure about 1), but I tend to disagree. The research I am aware of indicates that chess is a learned skill, rather nurture over nature. I think it is about two things: 1) hours and effectiveness of study, and 2) physical stamina. Old players cannot compete with young ones with regards to physical stamina. IMO that explains why old players (40+) can play well above their OTB level in correspondence chess. Plus I also think it's true from my personal experience ;)
